Definition: Let $\mathcal{D}(\lambda, \chi)$ denote a family of probability distributions with statistical parameters $\lambda$ and $\chi$. Then, the parameter $\chi$ is referred to as a “shape parameter”, if it is neither a location parameter nor a scale parameter nor a function of these (such as a rate parameter).
