Definition: Let $\mathcal{D}(\lambda, \rho)$ denote a family of probability distributions with statistical parameters $\lambda$ and $\rho$. Then, the parameter $\rho$ is referred to as a “rate parameter” or “inverse scale parameter”, if it is the reciprocal inverse of a scale parameter with respect to this family of distributions.

\[\label{eq:para-scal} \rho \;\; \text{rate} \quad \Leftrightarrow \quad \sigma = 1/\rho \;\; \text{scale} \; .\]
